Cavaradossi’s reply to the sacristan when he asks if the painter is doing penance is changed from “Pranzai”  “I have eaten. What is the story? In despair, she pleads for mercy but realizes she must agree to the bargain. They are old friends but as Cavaradossi is on the brink of assisting Angelotti, who should show up but Tosca herself. In response, Illica condemned Puccini for treating his librettists “like stagehands” and reducing the text to a shadow of its original form.
She then says that she forgives him which is perhaps not the most apposite time to mention it , lights a candle, places a crucifix on his body and then leaves. The lovers ecstatically plan for the future but are interrupted by the arrival of the firing squad. Ten years later, in , Sabajno returned to the opera for the third time, recording it, by the electrical process, with the orchestra and chorus of the Teatro alla Scala and with stars Carmen Melis and Apollo Granforte in the roles of Tosca and Scarpia. Scarpia interrogates the sacristan and learning Cavaradossi has been here, becomes convinced that he is on the right track. The sound quality shows its age a little but the digital restoration is extremely fine. Cavaradossi explains the likeness; he has merely observed the Marchesa at prayer in the church. The Sacristan has a bit of a grumble about it and wanders stooryline. It contains depictions of torture, murder and suicide, as well as some of Puccini’s best-known lyrical arias.
Tosca | The Opera
Cavaradossi describes the “hidden harmony” ” Recondita armonia ” in the contrast between the blonde beauty of his painting and his dark-haired lover, the singer Floria Tosca. L’Almanacco di Gherardo Casaglia in Italian. A third called the opera “three hours of noise”.

Ashbrook applauds Puccini for deleting the section from a point in the work where delay is almost unendurable as events rush to their conclusion, but points out that the orchestra’s recalling “E lucevan le stelle” in the final notes would seem less incongruous if it was meant to underscore Tosca’s and Cavaradossi’s love for each other, rather than being simply a melody which Tosca never hears.
Sciarrone arrives with the news that the earlier report from Marengo was premature and that the French had gained a victory. He summons Tosca from her concert in the courtyard below, and she is shocked to see the captured Cavaradossi. True of heart but relentlessly jealous. Once Tosca has gone, Angelotti reappears. The opera was subsequently premiered at venues throughout Europe, the Americas, Australia and the Far East;  by the outbreak of war in it had been performed in more than 50 cities worldwide.

Finding both herself and her lover at the mercy of Scarpia, she prays, musing over her darkened fate and asking why God has seemingly abandoned her.
When Tosca arrives looking for her lover, Scarpia artfully storylibe her jealous instincts by implying a relationship storylune the painter and the Marchesa Attavanti. Tosca arrives again – why’s she hanging about in the chapel so much? The opera likely would never have been written, at least not by Puccini, if it weren’t for the esteem of a respected elder and the jealousy inspired by a contemporary.
The iris opens and closes to reveal surreal scenes beyond the action.
Tosca premiered at a time of unrest in Rome, and its first performance was delayed for a oper for fear of disturbances. He tells Spoletta to arrange a mock execution, both men repeating that it will be “as we did with Count Palmieri,” and Spoletta exits.

Cavaradossi is dragged back in and upon hearing that Tosca has broken, he is absolutely devastated. He tries to write a letter of farewell to Tosca and reflects on the joy she has brought him. Before they can do anything, we hear Tosca’s voice soaring out to Cavaradossi.
Tosca in a nutshell
Osborne describes the scenes that follow—Cavaradossi’s interrogation, his torture, Scarpia’s sadistic tormenting of Tosca—as Puccini’s musical equivalent of grand guignol to which Cavaradossi’s brief “Vittoria! We begin in Sant’Andrea della Valle, a large church in Rome.
Cavaradossi, an artist, returns to continue work on his painting of Mary Magdalene. Scarpia makes a deal with Tosca. Waiting for his execution, Cavaradossi bribes the jailer so that he can write a farewell letter to Tosca, recalling the intensity of their love and mourning that he will never see her again. Overall the actual opera loses much of its visual power. In a television version of the opera was filmed at the locations prescribed by Puccini, at the times of day at which each act takes place.
The opera begins without any prelude; the opening chords of the Scarpia motif lead immediately to the agitated appearance of Angelotti and the enunciation of the “fugitive” motif. Naturally, Cavaradossi tries to convince her that she’s the only one for him he’s particularly fond of her eyes, apparentlybut he says that he can’t meet her at his villa that night.
An introductory bar theme for the horns will later be sung by Cavaradossi and Tosca in their final duet.
